このフレーズを覚えたい! ワンポイントアドバイス

hear through the grapevine : 間接的に聞く
直接話を聞いていないが、間接的に情報を得ることを表わします。「噂では聞いている」ことを表わします。

例)Briannaは噂の真相を確かめようとしています。
Brianna: I heard through the grapevine that you're dating Suzy. When did that happen?
Mark: We've been dating for a couple of weeks.
Brianna: あなたがSuzyと付き合っているって噂で聞いたわ。いつそうなったの?
Mark: 付き合って数週間くらいかな。

in demand : 需要がある
人や物などが多くの人に認められて人気があることを表わします。

例)Joely は娘の誕生日に渡すプレゼントの話をしています。
Joely: Her birthday is next week and I can't find the doll anywhere.
Trina: Yeah, it's in demand. I think all the stores are sold out.
Joely: 来週うちの子の誕生日なんだけど、あの人形がどこにもみつからないのよ。
Trina: そうね、人気があるからね。どのお店も売り切れなのよ。


have an eye (for something) : (何かに対して)見る目がある
何かに対して見る目があることを表わします。

例)Bob はオフィスに飾る絵を探していますが…
Bob: I don't know what to get. I have no idea about paintings.
Greta: You should ask Lori to help. She has a real eye for art.
Bob: 何を買えばいいのか分からないんだ。絵の事は何も知らないし。
Greta: Lori toに聞くべきよ。彼女は見る目があるから。

dressed to kill : 着飾る
洋服をうまく着こなすこと、着飾ることなどを表わします。

例)Paula: Did you see Andy yesterday? He was dressed to kill.
Tina: Yeah, I think he had a job interview. He should wear a suit more often.
Paula: 昨日Andyを見た? ビシッとした格好していたわよ。
Tina: そうね、面接があったんだと思うわ。もっとスーツを着るべきよね。

(例文)

高校時代の友達が仕事で大活躍しているようです。

Tara: Have you heard from Juliette lately?
Charlene: No, but I heard through the grapevine her business is doing well.
Tara: She got into fashion merchandising, right?
Charlene: Yeah, apparently she's really in demand.
Tara: Good for her. She always had an eye for what looked good.
Charlene: I know. She has excellent taste.
Tara: Even in high school she was stylish... always dressed to kill.
Charlene: Yeah, I guess it's no surprise she chose that job.
